In response to a request from student governance, the Library is extending its Spring 2008 Semester hours:
Fridays - closing one hour later, 10 pm instead of 9 pm Saturdays - opening one hour earlier, 9 am instead of 10 am Sundays - opening one hour earlier, 10 am instead of 11 am Complete schedule of Library hours for Spring Semester, as of May 4, 2008: Monday - Thursday 7:00 am - 1:00 am Friday 7:00 am - 10:00 pm Saturday 9:00 am - 9:00 pm Sunday 10:00 am - 1:00 am New Online History of SUNY Upstate
The Historical Collections Department in the Health Sciences Library has just completed a project that makes available online a very important resource on the history of SUNY Upstate Medical University. The manuscript history of the school, titled, Chronological Calendar of Events of the College of Medicine at Syracuse, 1872 - 1968, with Some Later Additions, has been digitized and is now available from the Historical Collections website.
The document is accessible from the Historical Collections home page under "New" and also is one of the items under the heading "History of the Institution." Here is the direct link: http://www.upstate.edu/library/history/institution/ferg.php The document is available as a single, searchable pdf file, and also as individual chapters (also searchable). This is one of the most heavily used items in Historical Collections and contains a wealth of information. It was compiled by J. Howard Ferguson, M.D., '26, chair of the Pathology Department from 1942-1969. Ferguson was also the project manager for the planning and construction of Weiskotten Hall in the 1930s, and he established the Medical Photography Department in 1928. The document contains many photographs, and the text is divided into chapters for each department, e.g., Anatomy, Ophthalmology, Pathology, etc. There is also a chronology of important events/landmarks in the history of the school (under "General"), statistical information about the school's enrollment and expenditures (through 1968), and chapters on Deans and Presidents, Secretaries, Administration, and the Library. Rediscovering the Class of 1885
A new exhibit, Rediscovering the Class of 1885, opens April 25, 2008 in the Health Sciences Library. The exhibit celebrates the recent rediscovery at SUNY Upstate of 25 nineteenth-century portrait photographs of the class and faculty of 1885 – now the earliest original class pictures in the library’s Historical Collections.

Medical instruments, student notebooks, 19th century exams and other original documents, along with many photographs, will be on display.  Illustration from the yearbook, The Onondagan, 1885 By telling the story of how these photographs were "lost" for 70 years and then found, the exhibit also draws attention to the underlying question of how the historical record may be preserved -- or lost -- for future generations, and how our interpretation of the past may be incomplete, or faulty, if the picture itself is incomplete. The items on display are drawn from Historical Collections in the Health Sciences Library of SUNY Upstate Medical University. Visit Historical Collections on the 2nd floor of the Library. Baldwin Cultural Crawl, held Friday and Saturday April 25th and 26th. Refreshments will be served in the library to passport holders on the 25th and 26th between 10 am and 2 pm. In-house judging for the show will be April 7 thru May 21, 2008. The Everson Museum exhibit will be open from October 10 through November 9, 2008. The General Assembly for CHP/CON/Library will present its Spring Faculty Development Workshop on Friday, April 11, 2008 from 12-2 pm in Room 2231, Weiskotten Hall. The topic is "Teaching Critical Thinking Skills to the Health-Care Student," presented by Dale Avers, P.T., D.P.T., Ph.D., Assistant Professor and Director of the Transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy program. Dr. Avers provides the following description: "This workshop will present a general introduction to critical thinking and its significance to the health professions. I will briefly discuss what a critical-thinking student looks like and how educators can facilitate this skill. Assessment methods that encourage critical thinking are also presented. This will be an active-learning workshop with participants expected to contribute in small groups." Each attendee will receive a copy of the booklet "The Miniature Guide to Critical Thinking: Concepts & Tools," and light refreshments will be provided. Faculty from all colleges are invited; please register by contacting Diane Luft.
OVID Gets a New Look
OVID Gateway, the current look of the well used MEDLINE, CINAHL and PsycINFO databases, is retiring. On Monday, February 4, 2008, OVID will unveil its new look, OVIDSP, with its crisp new color scheme, streamlined features - such as limits in a collapsible menu - and multiple search tabs.
NIH Mandatory Public Access Policy
In accordance with Division G, Title II, Section 218 of PL 110-161 (Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2008), the NIH voluntary Public Access Policy (NOT-OD-05-022) is now mandatory. The law states:
The Director of the National Institutes of Health shall require that all investigators funded by the NIH submit or have submitted for them to the National Library of Medicine’s PubMed Central an electronic version of their final, peer-reviewed manuscripts upon acceptance for publication, to be made publicly available no later than 12 months after the official date of publication: Provided, That the NIH shall implement the public access policy in a manner consistent with copyright law.
