American Medical Association: Public Health. This site is the American Medical Association’s compilation of their own program and policy web sites related to geriatric and adolescent health, violence prevention, health disparities and obesity.

American Society of Health-System Pharmacists: Public Health Resource Centers  This site provides links to five collections of online resources related to Emergency Preparedness, Health Disparities, Influenza, Pandemic Planning and Tobacco Cessation for both consumers and health care providers.

American College of Epidemiology  This site provides an introduction to the field of Epidemiology, in particular with an educational module titled “What is epidemiology, anyway?”

New York New Jersey Public Health Training Center  This web site represents one of 14 Public Health Training Centers across the nation, funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) “to bring the theoretical expertise of faculty at accredited schools of public health together with the practical experience of leaders in public health practice.”  The Center is a collaboration between the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, the University at Albany School of Public Health, and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey – School of Public Health and state, city, county and local health departments throughout New York and New Jersey.  The mission of the Center is “to enhance the ability of the current and future public health workforce to effectively deliver the Essential Public Health Services to communities throughout New York and New Jersey.”

 

Organizations
American Public Health Association (APHA).  APHA is the oldest and largest association of public health professionals in the world.  APHA provides a searchable web site in support of their mission to protect communities from preventable health threats.  The section of the web site devoted to Programs and Resources is of primary interest in the area of Public Health.

World Health Organization (WHO).  This is the home page of the World Health Organization, the directing and coordinating authority for health within the United Nations system.  The site offers many pages of information on the history of WHO and WHO programs.  Public Health information is available geographically and by topic.  The site also includes data and statistics, as well as links to WHO publications.

World Federation of Public Health Associations The WFPHA was founded in 1967 and the members are national and regional public health associations, as well as regional associations of schools of public health presently numbering more than 70.  The site offers links to programs and publications of WFPHA as well as a page of resources featuring links to journals and Global Public Health links.

NAPHP  The mission of the National Association of Public Health Policy is “to improve the health of the people of the United States by helping to develop health policy, formulating and initiating legislation to implement such policy, and supporting measures to strengthen the public health services.”  The searchable web site contains NAPHP policy statements and links to the International Science Oversight Board, an independent body formed by NAPHP to monitor research for impartiality from business interests.  The web site also contains articles on Infectious Diseases, Mental Health, Illicit Drug Policy and Public Policy.

NALBOH. The mission of the National Association of Local Boards of Health is “to prepare and strengthen boards of health, empowering them to promote and protect the health of their communities through education, training, and technical assistance.”  The site contains a directory of contact information for local Boards of Health and information on NALBOH educational programs and publications.  Of interest is a page with links to each State Board of Health and the corresponding legislative code.

National Public Health Performance Standards Program (NPHPSP).  The NPHPSP is a collaboration of public health agencies and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) who have partnered to develop clear, measurable performance standards for state and local public health systems to help ensure the delivery of the Essential Public Health Services.  The site features data collection instruments for health system assessments.

National Network for Immunization Information    The National Network for Immunization Information (NNii) provides up-to-date, science-based information to healthcare professionals, the media, and the public: everyone who needs to know the facts about vaccines and immunization.

New York State Public Health Association  The NYSPHA is a professional organization with a mission “to improve community health through education and prevention.”  Of interest is a page within the site which answers the question “What is Public Health?” and another page called “TrainingNet” which serves as a clearinghouse for public health training and education nationwide.

New York State Association of County Health Officials  NYSACHO is a membership organization representing all 58 local health departments.  The mission of NYSACHO is “to support local health departments in their efforts to provide and improve essential public health services in their communities.”  The site includes a link to the parent organization, the National Association of County & City Health Officials (NACCHO) http://www.naccho.org/.

PHANYC - Public Health Association of New York City.  PHANYC, formed in 1936, is an affiliate of the American Public Health Association.  The site contains information on public health advocacy and policy, as well as publications of PHANYC.

Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation - Health Policy, Public Health Education- Kaiser Family Foundation.  The Kaiser Family Foundation is a non-profit, private operating foundation which “develops and runs its own research and communications programs, sometimes in partnership with other non-profit research organizations or major media companies” (see more at http://www.kff.org/about/index2.cfm).  This web site is full of information with reports of many types (i.e. fact sheets, charts and data, interactive tools, issue briefs, presentations, reports and studies, surveys, testimony).  Public Health topics covered in depth include Medicaid, Medicare, Costs / Insurance, Uninsured / Coverage, State Policy, Prescription Drugs, HIV / AIDS, Minority Health, Women’s Health Policy, and Entertainment Media Studies.

Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology.  APIC’s mission is to improve health and patient safety by reducing risks of infection and other adverse outcomes.   The site features APIC Guidelines and Standards, Public Policy links and extensive Resources links.

Federation of American Scientists: Program for Monitoring Emerging Diseases  ProMed is the FAS policy initiative calling for global monitoring of emerging diseases.  This is a very simple web site with links to the International Society for Infectious Disease and WHO Outbreak News, as well as ProMed papers and resources,

US Government Agencies
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  CDC′s Mission is "to promote health and quality of life by preventing and controlling disease, injury, and disability."  CDC is organized into twelve National Centers under four main categories: Environmental Health and Injury Prevention, Health Information and Services, Health Promotion, and Infectious Diseases.  Each National Center has a wealth of valuable public health information.

CDC: Summary of Notifiable Diseases   The CDC National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System is used to produce an annual Summary of Notifiable Diseases available at this site.  Notifiable diseases are those which may require quarantine measures to prevent the spread of the disease.

NCPHI .  The CDC National Center for Public Health Informatics “provides leadership in the application of information and computer science and technology to public health practice, research, and learning.”  The Center is divided into five Divisions: Alliance Management and Consultation; Emergency Preparedness and Response; Informatics Shared Services; Integrated Surveillance Systems and Services; and Knowledge Management.  Of interest is a link to the CDC Public Health Information Network: http://www.cdc.gov/phin/index.html.

U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration   HRSA is a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  The site has links for Clinician Recruitment, Health Professions, Healthcare Systems, HIV/AIDS, Maternal & Child Health, Primary Health Care and Rural Health.

Healthy People 2010 /.  This site is supported by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.  Healthy People 2010 challenges individuals, communities, and professionals to take specific steps to ensure that good health, as well as long life, are enjoyed by all.   Resources and links to that end are available on the site.

Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services  CMMS is a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  There is administrative information such as enrollment and regulations, as well as research, resources, and education links.

The Office of Minority Health - Home Page.  OMH, established in 1986, is another division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  The mission is “to improve and protect the health of racial and ethnic minority populations through the development of health policies and programs that will eliminate health disparities.”

Statistics: Data
CDC WONDER  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention developed CDC WONDER (Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research) to provide open access to public health information gathered by CDC.  CDC WONDER makes available statistical research data, reference materials, reports and guidelines.  Data can be downloaded directly into desktop applications.

U.S. Census Bureau  The site offers a wide range of data on the United States population.

WHO: Data and statistics  This World Health Organization website features data by public health category or by searching four databases: WHO Statistical Information System (WHOSIS) - National statistics for 50 core indicators on mortality, morbidity, risk factors, service coverage, and health systems; WHO Global InfoBase Online - Data on chronic diseases and their risk factors for all WHO Member States; Global Health Atlas – Standardized data and statistics for infectious diseases at country, regional, and global levels; Regional statistics - Statistical information from WHO Regional Offices.

New York State Department of Health - Statistics & Data  This site features data from the NYS Department of Health sorted by topic.

NCHS  The CDC National Center for Health Statistics is a central location for data on a variety of public health topics.

NCHS - GIS - Public Health G I S News and Information  Public Health GIS News and Information is a bimonthly, electronic report "dedicated to scientific excellence and advancement in disease control and prevention through the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology."

SEER   The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) is an authoritative source of information on cancer incidence and survival in the United States.

 

Statistics: Tools
CDC: Epi Info  Epi Info is free software developed by the CDC which can be downloaded from this web site.  Epi Info is a sophisticated suite of software including various applications which can be used to develop databases and analyze epidemiologic statistics.  Tutorials and user support materials are also available at the Epi Info web site.

ArcGIS Explorer  ArcGIS Explorer is Geographic Information System mapping software which can be downloaded for free from this web site.  ArcGIS Explorer is sophisticated software can be used to create custom maps with your own data, which can be combined with features and tools provided by ArcGIS.

Healthy GIS Newsletter Archives HealthyGIS is a free quarterly publication for
health and human services Geographic Information System users.

 

Public Health Portals
Directory of Epidemiology Societies  This site was created in conjunction with the first North American Congress of Epidemiology held in Toronto in 2001, and is a listing of links to 22 Epidemiology Societies around the world.

Europa - Public Health  This link is the European Commission Public Health web site supported by the European Union Health and Consumer Protection Directorate-General.  The mission of the EU Health and Consumer Protection Directorate-General is to help make Europe's citizens healthier, safer and more confident by keeping up to date the European Union’s laws on the safety of food and other products, on consumers' rights and on the protection of people's health.  The Commission strives to improve public health in the European Union, to prevent human illness and diseases and to obviate sources of danger to human health.  General information about the programs of the Commission appear on this site, as well as links to sites devoted to special topics such as Bioterrorism and HIV / AIDS.

European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control  ECDC is a European Union agency established in 2005 with a mission to “identify, assess and communicate current and emerging threats to human health posed by infectious diseases.”  The site includes links to ECDC activities, publications, and health topics.

Thomas Jefferson University: JEFFSELECTS: Community and Public Health.  This portal provides a starting point for research organized into ten resource groups: Major Subject Gateways, U.S. Government Resources, State and Local Resources, U.S. Organizations, International Organizations, Community Locator Tools, Public Health Assessment Tools, Local Government Health Departments, Local Planning Commissions, Related Resources.

Martindale's Public Health Center  This web site is the creation of Jim Martindale, a former consultant to the University of California, Irvine.  It is a unique collection of links to four Public Health subgroups: Journals; Public Health Atlases, Cases, Courses, Videos/Movies; Laboratory Diagnostics & Protocols; and a Public Health Overview.

Medical Society of the State of New York - Public Health  The Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY) is an organization of approximately 30,000 licensed physicians, medical residents, and medical students in New York State.  The Public Health portal on the MSSNY page includes resources divided into six categories: Health Alerts; Disaster Preparedness; Immunization; Public Health Concerns; Health Care Disparity; and Staying Healthy.

National Health Policy Forum  NHPF is a non-profit based at the George Washington University in Washington, DC.   “The National Health Policy Forum seeks to inform the public policy process by helping participants—federal health policymakers in the legislative and executive branches and in congressional support agencies—engage in rigorous, constructive, and respectful dialogue.” (see http://www.nhpf.org/about/about.htm).   NHPF produces Issue Briefs, Background Papers, and Basics reports to inform policymakers.   A portal with links to other resources can be found at http://www.nhpf.org/links/links.htm.

Partners in Information Access for the Public Health Workforce  The mission of the Partners in Information Access for the Public Health Workforce is “Helping the public health workforce find and use information effectively to improve and protect the public's health.”  The main topics linked from the portal home page are Health Promotion and Health Education; Literature and Guidelines; Health Data Tools and Statistics; Grants and Funding; Education and Training; Legislation and Policy; Conferences and Meetings; Finding People; Discussion and E-mail Lists; and Jobs and Careers.

Public Health Policy (Canada)  The Public Health Policy web site “provides a place for decision makers, policy analysts, students and other interested parties to find information about key issues impacting the provision of public health in Canada and internationally.”  This web site is not produced or endorsed by the Canadian government, but rather highlights the public health work of Dr. Kumanan Wilson.  The site includes links to Canadian Public Health Reports.

Resources of Scholarly Societies - Public Health.  This site, sponsored by the University of Waterloo Library (Ontario, Canada), is one of a set of subject pages in the Scholarly Societies Project, which facilitates access to websites of scholarly societies across the world.  Links to websites of scholarly societies in Public Health (including epidemiology, infectious disease control, disease prevention, sanitation, health promotion, and environmental quality promotion) are listed on the web site.  The web sites are assigned a “URL stability rank” (see more detail on the ranking formula at http://www.scholarly-societies.org/URL_stability_rank.html).

Population Reference Bureau  The PRB focuses on four "core themes": Reproductive Health and Fertility; Children and Families; Population and the Environment; and Population Futures—Aging, Inequality and Poverty, Migration and Urbanization, and Gender.   The PRB site has a collection of links divided into these core themes.

Resource Guide for Public Health Preparedness   The Resource Guide for Public Health Preparedness is a gateway to freely available online resources related to public heath preparedness. Resources include expert guidelines, fact sheets, websites, research reports, articles, and other tools aimed at the public health community. All resources are cataloged and may be searched by keyword or browsed by topic.
