Reconstructed Master List of Original Holdings in the
Library of Geneva Medical College (1834-1871)

This is a short-title list of what Geneva Medical College (GMC) Library actually held (i.e., titles eligible for the Geneva Collection, Special Collections Vault, Department of Historical Collections, Health Sciences Library, SUNY Upstate Medical University, by critieria # 1 and # 2), as nearly as can be determined by physical and documentary evidence:

(B) Bookplates
(M) Library markings other than bookplates
(1) The 1897 Syracuse University College of Medicine accession book
(2) The list of donations in the 1836-37 GMC circular
(2a) The list of donations in the June 1838 GMC annual circular
(3) The Hobart College Library list of accessions, 1856-1886 (manuscript)
(4) The Hobart College Library catalog, 1856-1857 (manuscript)

The evidence code is given at end of each entry below. Codes B, 1, 2, 2a, 3, 4 are completely done for every book in the Special Collections Vault. Assigning books to the Geneva Collection by code M is an ongoing and probably never-ending process. Note that there are some GMC Library books which have been rebound with loss of original GMC markings; and there are plenty of unrecorded gifts. Some of the entries below are sketchy because some of the sources are sketchy.

Reconstructing a list of the holdings of GMC Library is important because GMC was important. As the institution that graduated the world's first woman doctor of modern times it has a unique and undying place in medical history.

In 1871 Hobart College dissolved the GMC medical faculty and sold all of GMC's movable property, including the library, to Dean John Towler. Towler and Professor of Surgery Frederick Hyde, acting as private citizens, donated this property to the Trustees of the fledgling Syracuse University (SU) on December 4, 1871, provided that SU immediately use it to establish a regular medical college approved by the American Medical Association. The Syracuse University College of Medicine existed until June 1, 1950, when SU sold it to the new SUNY campus in Syracuse, where it remains today as part of SUNY Upstate Medical University.

GMC had an excellent library in its time, with at least 811 and probably over a thousand volumes. But a series of disasters, such as fire, neglect, poor record keeping, poor housing until 1996, irresponsible weeding in the 1950s, probable theft in the late 1800s, etc., plagued GMC Library and severely reduced it from its original state. From 1872 to 1897 it was tragically and in some ways irreversibly neglected, with many of its holdings sold, lost, or stolen. In 1895 the pro forma Librarian, Professor of Ophthalmology Frank William Marlow, claimed that the library had not been used that year because "there was no serviceable reading room." The picture began to brighten in 1897 when the medical school moved into new quarters on McBride Street in Syracuse and Marlow hired a medical student, Elizabeth Latimer Shrimpton, at twelve and a half cents an hour as its first genuine library worker. She reacted with great professionalism to this challenge. Yet, when she finished the formal incorporation of the GMC volumes into the SU library holdings in 1898, only 406 volumes still remained from the original GMC collection.

A full reconstruction of a GMC Library catalog is impossible. Much of the evidence no longer exists. Some conjecture about the contents of GMC Library can be extrapolated from the list of GMC textbooks.

Titles marked with an asterisk exist in the current Geneva Collection. They may be replacement copies, not the original GMC Library copies. The rest of the titles constitute part of the "wish list" for the Geneva Collection.
