All teaching and research involving the use of live vertebrate animals conducted at SUNY Upstate must be reviewed and approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) in compliance with state and federal regulations.

The IACUC [formerly known as the Committee for the Humane Use of Animals (CHUA)] evaluates the animal care and use program at SUNY Upstate Medical University and facilitates the conduct of meaningful scientific research that:

  1. avoids or minimizes discomfort, distress, and pain in experimental animals consistent with sound scientific practices,
  2. uses the minimum number of animals necessary to obtain valid results, and
  3. considers non-animal models wherever possible.

The Principal Investigator must email the completed animal use protocol to the IACUC office by 4:00 pm on the 15th of each month. Protocol will be reviewed at the following month’s meeting, scheduled for the 2nd working Monday of each month.
