Hope Happens @ Medical Schools & Teaching Hospitals

Upstate Medical University and its Upstate University Hospital is Central New York's only academic medical center (AMC), that unique area of health care that involves a medical school and one or more teaching hospitals. As one of 131 AMCs across the country—whose ranks include Harvard, Mayo, Johns Hopkins, UCLA, Texas Tech, Vanderbilt and Columbia—Upstate shares with its colleagues the three central missions of academic medicine:

  • Educate future physicians
  • Provide essential health and medical services
  • Contribute to medicine's advances through biomedical research

But not to be overlooked are the pivotal roles AMCs also play as champions of and economic drivers for their communities. Upstate, for example, has just opened Central New York's first and only children's hospital after years of advocacy, and is also the region's largest employer.
