Dental Shortage Areas Mapped

Commission for a Healthy CNY

The Commission's Dental Health Subcommittee collaborated with the Syracuse University Community Geographer (the Community Geographer) to map dental shortage areas and identify locations of dental specialists in the counties served by the Commission. The Syracuse University Community Geographer position was created in September 2005 with funding from The Gifford Foundation, the Syracuse University Chancellor's Office and the Syracuse University Geography Department. Community Geographer and her students use geographic information systems (GIS) and spatial analyses to create maps that:

  • Raise awareness about important community problems and resources
  • Inform community and neighborhood planning precesses
  • Support community organizing
  • Advovate important community concerns

Working with the commission's Dental Health Subcommittee, maps of counties in the area served by the Commission were created that display the locations of dental resources.
