Medical Speak Word of the Week— PAPILLARY and FOLLICULAR

Definition: Both words refer to cancer of the thyroid gland. Papillary tumors are the most common, accounting for more than 70 percent of thyroid cancers. The tumor is irregular, solid or cystic, and when treated, the cure rate is between 80 and 90 percent. Three times as many women, as men, who have cancerous thyroid tumors will have papillary tumors of the thyroid.

Follicular thyroid cancer is the second most common - less than 15 percentof thyroid cancers. Follicular is more aggressive than papillary, and usually occurs in older patients. Again, three times as many women as men develop follicular cancer. Its cure rate - is related to the size of the tumors.
