Needle Stick/Blood and Body Fluid Exposures

Downtown Campus

In the event of exposure to blood or body fluids you should:

  • Immediately wash the affected area with soap and water, or for eye involvement, flush with clean water.
  • Immediately notify Employee Health during weekday hours (7:30am-4:00pm) at (315) 464-4260.  Report to the Emergency Department after 3:30pm.
  • Report to the Emergency Department after hours and on weekends; identify yourself as an Upstate employee, student or affiliate. Follow up with Employee Health on the next business day.
  • Complete Injury Report
  • Schedule Nurse Visit for BBF Exposure through the ESH portal, https://eshportal.upstate.edu/.
  • For your appointment, bring the source patient's MR#, so Infection Prevention can access lab results.

Community Campus

  • Report to the Emergency Department after hours and on weekends; identify yourself as an Upstate employee, student or affiliate. Follow up with Employee Health on the next business day.
  • Complete Injury Report
  • Schedule CG Nurse Visit for BBF Exposure through the ESH portal, https://eshportal.upstate.edu/.
  • For your appoitment, bring the source patient's MR#, so Infection Prevention can access lab results.
