A Project to Call Your Own

2 researchers in lab

Jesse Schallek, a PhD student in Neuroscience (above right, with his advisor, Daniel Tso, PhD), specializes in retinal imaging, using reflectants to look for signals in the retina of the eye that give clues about its health. The technique may be useful in early detection of eye diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration.

"The quality of the research brought me here," Schallek said. "SUNY Upstate offers unique opportunities to work in a clinical environment, with basic research going on in the same institution. Students can see how their work in the lab can affect the quality of health care." Schallek said SUNY Upstate students are granted the opportunity to work with some of the finest researchers not only in the United States, but globally as well. There is a diversity of projects, and each has an impact on basic science."
