MD/PhD Program

Students enrolled in the MD/PhD Program at SUNY Upstate Medical University will receive training in both medicine and basic scientific research.

This program awards:

  • A dual MD/PhD degree

The MD/PhD program at SUNY Upstate Medical University is designed for college graduates who seek the medical training and advanced research skills required for careers in academic medicine and medical research. This seven-year, dual-degree program combines our medical school (College of Medicine) with our graduate school in biomedical sciences (College of Graduate Studies) awarding graduates with a dual MD/PhD degree.

Our graduates pursue careers as physician scientists, combining their knowledge of basic research and clinical practice to enhance the treatment of disease--typically in an academic setting.

About the Program

Our highly integrated program fully prepares students to become expert physician scientists. Courses and seminars specific to MD/PhD students provide information on cutting edge research, training in grant writing and presentation skills, and a formalized structure for the integration of the medical and research components of MD/PhD training.

This program is structured so that entering students complete the first two years of the Medical School curriculum, while participating in research activities during the summer. Students then select a laboratory for their doctoral research and complete their PhD thesis before returning to Medical School for their 3rd and 4th years of clinical training.

Students in the program receive a full tuition waiver and an annual stipend of $32,000.
