About the College

Weiskotten Hall

The College of Graduate Studies educates students with bachelor's and master's degrees to be biomedical research scientists, preparing them for careers in academic medical centers, colleges and universities, biomedical research institutes, the biotechnology industry, and government agencies. The College educates graduate students through its six biomedical science programs.

Biomedical Sciences Program

The Biomedical Sciences Program for PhD students provides you with maximum choice in selecting a research specialization, and gives you a full year before making the crucial decision as to the topic and mentor for your thesis research. During the first year, you rotate through three labs, choosing from a variety of well funded labs in leading-edge research areas.

To help you select your rotations, faculty members from each department program take an afternoon early in the semester to present the research carried on in the program. After successful completion of your lab rotations and a first-year core curriculum taught by faculty from throughout the college, you select your thesis mentor and transition into the appropriate degree-granting program.

(Note: The College of Graduate Studies also awards master's degrees and MD/PhD degrees. See Curriculum)

Excellent Education

Upstate Medical University has a long history of providing an excellent education. Our outstanding faculty includes international experts in many areas including neuroscience, cardiovascular physiology, cellular bioenergetics, structural biology and human retroviruses.

Our graduate students receive training in the latest scientific research techniques using state-of-the art technology and instrumentation.

In addition, we are committed to helping our students become well-trained scientists by providing mentoring, opportunities to hone presentation skills, and a solid grounding in grant and paper writing.

Medical Connection

SUNY Upstate is one of 125 academic medical centers in the United States, and the only one in Central New York. Academic medical centers, which are built around medical schools and teaching hospitals, lead the nation in conducting biomedical research, educating health professionals and providing the most advanced care to patients.

Being part of an academic medical center gives our students and research scientists access to biomedical specimens, instrumentation, and other resources associated with a major medical center. Our students and scientists are constantly rewarded with the knowledge that improvements in human health are based upon research like theirs.

Since we are an academic medical center, our graduate students have an opportunity to pursue basic research with an immediate clinical relevance.
