The Division of Pediatric Endocrinology evaluates and treats infants, children
and adolescents with endocrine and metabolic disorders that may result in developmental
abnormalities, such as short or tall stature, slow or accelerated growth, early
or delayed puberty, thyroid problems, obesity, diabetes and hypoglycemia.
The
center administers the New York State Congenital Hypothyroid Screening Program
which is designed to identify newborns with decreased thyroid function so that
early intervention can prevent mental retardation.
Generally, diabetic children
10 years old and younger are cared for by the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology,
and children over 10 at the Joslin Center for Diabetes.
Both programs provide:
- One-on-one consultation with a pediatric endocrinologist/diabetologist
- Instruction
in managing the disease
- Individualized education with certified diabetes
nurse educators and dietitians
