Cleft and Craniofacial

University Hospital
750 East Adams St.
(315) 464-6586

In one in every 600 to 700 births, a child is born with a cleft lip, cleft palate or both. Other craniofacial abnormalities are less common. While the baby is usually healthy in other ways, cleft lips and palates create difficulties, often seriously affecting feeding, speech and hearing.

The Center for Cleft and Craniofacial Anomalies is the only place in the region that offers a team of specialists to work with each child.

The team includes:

  • Plastic surgeon
  • Craniomaxillofacial surgeon
  • Otolaryngologist
  • Hearing specialist
  • Speech pathologist
  • Orthodontist
  • Geneticist
  • Social worker
  • Nnurse

Other specialists are available as needed. In addition to helping make the best treatment plan for the baby, the team provides coordinated services as the child grows, as well as counseling and support for both the child and family.
