Child Abuse Facts
Child abuse is an epidemic. According to New York State Child Protective Services data, 209,425 children were reported as abused in 2006. That makes child abuse ten times more common than children killed or injured in car crashes and forty times more common than children with elevated blood lead levels.
Recent statistics from child protective agencies report almost 1,000,000 children each year are victims of substantiated abuse or neglect.
- 58% of the victims were neglected
- 21% suffered physical abuse
- About 11% were sexually abused
An estimated 1,400 deaths resulted from abuse, with 86% of these fatalities in children under age 6.
