Opportunities for students enrolled in Child Life programs include:

Child Life Practicum

This entry-level training, offered three times a year, is intended to introduce the undergraduate student to child life as well as the variety of experiences facing children and adolescents in a healthcare setting. A certified child life specialist (CCLS) will supervise the student as he or she participates in individual and group activities with children and families.

Qualifications

Practicum students must have completed core curriculum, including child development course work, and must have demonstrated successful experiences with children. Non-traditional Child Life students must have taken the Intro to Child Life course. Volunteer work within a child life program under the supervision of a Certified Child Life Specialist is recommended but not mandatory. This type of training is highly recommended for those students who are considering a career as a child life specialist. Practicum students must complete 8-10 hours per week for a minimum of 100 total hours.

Application for practicum training requires submission of a completed application as well as an on-site interview. Application is not a guarantee of acceptance. Due to the expectation that we provide students with quality supervision and education during placement, a limited number of students are accepted per semester.

Child Life Internship

Three times a year, for 15 weeks, our Child Life Program offers comprehensive internship training to qualified students currently enrolled in an academic program in Child Life or a related field. These are full time training positions with sessions beginning in January, May, and September.

Qualifications

To be an eligible candidate, you must possess:

  • Core curriculum classes in child life or related field
  • Student or work experience with children in group settings
  • Experience working with children in an established child life program in a health care setting (minimum of 100 hour Child Life Practicum)
  • Non-traditional Child Life students must have coursework verified by Child Life Council
  • Knowledge of psychosocial issues related to illness and hospitalization
