Friend in Deed Medical Services
Friend in Deed supports the medical services provided by University Hospital. In the past funds have:
- Provided money for the development of a special new program within the Autism Spectrum Disorders Clinic.
- Enabled cancer patients undergoing radiation treatment to find welcome and calming distraction via unique virtual-imagery technology. For instance, patients can imagine themselves on a sunny island beach or on a wooded path during a bright autumn day.
- Helped the hospital expand its bereavement program, which provides group support and end-of-life comfort to patient, families, and staff.
- Provided basic patient needs that are required for discharge, including clothing; mediation; car seats; and temporary, transitional housing for the families of sick and injured patients.
- Enabled the orthopedic department to purchase a computerized and interactive imagery system that helps patients better understand their specific surgery as well as its benefits and risks.
- Initiated a smoking cessation program for nurses.
- Bought teddy bears for pediatric patients to hug as they are being taken to surgery.
- Provided layettes for newborns of low-income mothers.
- Supported various programs within the intensive care units.
