FAMP1642 Examining Issues/Primary Care (Literature & Medicine)

This elective will examine health issues in primary care, using the perspectives afforded by literature and theater. "Hands-on" literature and drama experiences will be part of the elective with attendance expected at live theater performances and at a local author lecture series. Topics to be included are: professionalism, resource allocation, physician-patient communication, quality of life, cultural diversity, and disability. Reading selections will be assigned with a two-hour group discussion to be conducted twice per month in addition to a monthly theater or author lecture experience to be followed by discussion. Proposed selections include: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime by Mark Haddon (communication issues), The Diving Bell and the Butterfly by Bauby (quality of life issues), Cider House Rules by John Irving (professionalism). Attendance will be expected at two Syracuse Stage performances TBA. The Rosamond Gifford Author Series Fall readings will also be included in the elective. Supplementation of the above activities and selections will be based on student interest and other available literary events. Cost for performances: $30.00 total. Course will be graded on a pass/fail basis.
