"I am a solo family practitioner in a pretty
little village about an hour from Syracuse. The office is a renovated house,
which dates back to civil war times. My workdays are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,
and Friday. I do not have regular hours on Thursday, but that day can be used
by the interested student for any projects he or she may want to do. I usually
make rounds at the local hospital around 8:00am and office hours start at 9:00.
The office day generally ends by 5:30.
My office has something very few other offices do, computerized medical records.
By this I mean the progress notes and prescriptions are done by computer right
then and there in the room with the patient. This is the way of the future,
and my office is a good way to get introduced to this important tool.
At the beginning of the rotation, the student will shadow me to get a sense
of how things work. Once the student and I feel comfortable with one another,
I will give the student some independence. This starts with the student going
into the room first to do whatever assessment is required for the patient visit.
The student will present the patient to me, I will then see the patient, and
will discuss the case. By the end of the rotation, the student will only see
the patient again if necessary. Instead, the student will just see the next
patient. Students have liked this approach in the past.
The patient mix is pretty typical for family practice with patients of all
ages and all problems. I do not do OB or surgery.
I use lunchtime to exercise at the gym at Colgate University. I can get the
student a pass to use those facilities if desired. Eating lunch can be squeezed
in in various ways, but if exercise is done at lunchtime, lunch will be short
for the student (I just eat a power bar before I go off to exercise).
It's important to me that the students not only learn some medicine, but also
learn something about how a typical day can be spent with non-medical matters.
I'm confident the student will enjoy the experience here. One more thing, the
hospital does have a house available for students and residents. I'm only an
hour from Syracuse, but the house may allow for better use of the student's
time and a more relaxing experience down here."

Driving Directions to Dr. Cohen's office:
Take Route 690/481 to Exit 3 (Fayetteville/Cazenovia). You will be on Route
5. Continue on Route 5 past Wegmans, keep heading away from Syracuse and turn
right onto highway 92, about half a mile past Wegmans. Continue through Manlius
and on to Cazenovia.
Turn left onto highway 20 just outside Cazenovia. Continue through Nelson and
Morrisville. About three and a half miles past Morrisville, turn right onto
Highway 46 going south. This will end as you pick up 12-B south after about
a mile. A very quiet and painless merge. Ignore it. Hamilton is about 4 miles
after the turnoff on #46.
Look for the welcome to Hamilton sign across from the McDonalds. The office
will be on the left, about 0.4 miles later, across from an Auto Care gas station.
If you get to the traffic light, you've gone too far. Turn back, and you will
find the office to be the 6th house on the right after the Burger King. It's
yellow with green shutters. Park in the back and use the rear entrance
