Family Medicine and Primary Care Internal Medicine comprise the core of clinical work in the program. This includes extensive patient care with increasing responsibility and independence, one-to-one clinical instruction and the chance to observe and participate in the lifestyle of a medical professional in a rural community.
Each student works under the direct supervision of board certified physicians who are approved as instructors by participating Upstate Medical University academic departments. Overall supervision and coordination of the student's schedule in the rural community is handled by the family medicine preceptor working closely with RMED coordinators from Upstate. As a supplement to instruction and to monitor the quality of the education experience, monthly visits to the rural site are made by faculty from clinical departments at the Upstate. During these teaching sessions, the student makes in-depth case presentations and receives consultation on difficult cases. These visits also include presentation of Continuing Medical Education programs to the rural hospital staff by visiting faculty.
Learning activities include daily office hours with the Family Practice preceptor, inpatient rounds, scheduled time with specialists, laboratory, night call, hospital lectures and other CME activity with preceptor, reading and computer literature searches. Students are encouraged to also take advantage of opportunities, as time permits, for additional learning experiences such as assisting at surgery and overnight emergency room coverage. The Student Experience pages have more information on daily life in the RMED program.
Reading of appropriate texts and other sources in each area of study is expected. The student should take advantage of the preceptor's personal library, the hospital medical library and any other available resources. Host hospital medical libraries have been upgraded as needed through purchase of textbooks and standard medical reference works
A computer link with Upstate Medical University is established at each rural training site using a personal computer provided by the RMED program. This enables the student to perform MEDLINE literature searches and to connect with Upstate's mainframe computer which supports a variety of information and communication tools, such as literature search and retrieval, electronic mail and connection to the World Wide Web.
