New York Communities and Preceptors—Community of Watkins Glen

Watkins Glen and its neighboring town, Montour Falls, are at the Southern tip of Seneca Lake. Driving time is about one hour and 45 minutes from Syracuse. Watkins Glen is home to a beautiful state park that is right in the middle of town. It also boasts an internationally known NASCAR race track.

Primary preceptors for this site include Drs. Blanche Borzell, Joseph Hinterberger, Stephen Spaulding and James Winkler. All are residency trained, board certified family physicians who provide the full range of health care including school health, substance abuse treatment, emergency medicine, long-term care and hospice care.

Schuyler Hospital is a recently built and very attractive 50 bed facility located in Montour Falls, which is 3 miles south of Watkins Glen. The hospital does about 130 deliveries per year. There is an attached 120 bed long term care facility and an adjacent physicians office building. The hospital sits on a hillside overlooking the southern tip of Seneca Lake, and has a close working relationship with Arnot-Ogden Hospital, a 400 bed facility 20 miles to the south in Elmira.

Preceptor Profile: Dr. Blacnhe A. Borzell

Dr. Borzell practices in Watkins Glen. There he takes care of predominately adult population but does see a significant number of pediatric patients. The diverse population he works with includes the poor, the mentally and physically handicapped, and substance abuse patients among others. His daily work involves time both in the office and the hospital. In the office he performs such procedures as cryosurgery, laceration repair and gynecologic exams among many others. The call schedule is every 3rd day and every 4th weekend on average.
