New York Communities and Preceptors—Community of Watertown

Watertown is a small city located 70 miles north of Syracuse via Interstate 81. The 1000 Islands/St. Lawrence River resort area and the Canadian border are 30 miles north of Watertown, and Lake Ontario lies 10 miles to the west. The expansion of Fort Drum as a major army base has added considerably to the population of the area.

Primary preceptors for this site are Drs. Joseph Wetterhahn and Bavesh Rajani. Dr. Wetterhahn is a 1987 graduate of Upstate Medical University and completed his residency in family practice at Williamsport Family Practice Residency in Pennsylvania. Dr. Rajani received the MD degree at Manchester Medical School, Manchester, England, and completed a residency in family practice at Edgeware General Hospital in London. Their practice is located in Watertown and they admit patients to Samaritan Medical Center.
Samaritan Medical Center is a modern 319 bed facility with Medical/Surgical, CCU, Maternity and Pediatric beds. It also has a Neonatal ICU, emergency and inpatient psychiatric services and an Ambulatory Surgery Center. The hospital serves as a regional referral center for Jefferson, Lewis, St. Lawrence and portions of Oswego Counties. Also located on the Samaritan campus is a 272 bed long-term care facility.

Preceptor Profile: Dr. Jason F. White

Dr. White practices in Watertown. There he takes care of predominately adult population but does see small number of pediatric patients.. The diverse population he works with includes the poor, the mentally ill, and HIV infected patients among others. His work involves time in the office and the hospital, nursing homes, and home visits. In the office he performs such procedures as pulmonary function testing, cardiac stress testing, joint injections and gynecologic exams among many others. He is in a very technologically up to date practice and uses portable computers in everyday patient interaction.
