New York Communities and Preceptors— Community of Pulaski

Pulaski is a small community located approximately 45 miles north of Syracuse on the Salmon River near where it empties into Lake Ontario. The area is known for sport salmon fishing and, in the winter, its prodigious snowfalls. The nearby Tug Hill Plateau is a popular location for cross-country ski racing events.

The clinical venue for this site is the Pulaski Health Center, a federally designated Community Health Center sponsored by Northern Oswego County Community Health Services, Inc. Preceptors for the site are Drs. Pat and Jay Chapman, both of whom are board certified family physicians who completed residency training at the Highland Hospital Family Practice Residency Program in Rochester. Other staff at the Health Center includes physician assistants, nurse practitioners, dentists, hygienists, x-ray technologists and staff nurses.
As the community is located some distance from both Oswego Hospital and Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown, Drs. Chapman do not admit or follow patients in the hospital, but refer all patients requiring acute care to physicians at both hospitals. Students complete non-family medicine requirements with specialist preceptors located in Oswego.
