New York Communities and Preceptors— Community of Oneonta

The City of Oneonta is located on the border of Otsego and Delaware counties about a 1 hour 45 minute drive southeast from Syracuse and a 50 minute drive northeast from Binghamton along Interstate 88. The city’s population is about 14,000 and it is the home of SUNY Oneonta and Hartwick College.

The primary preceptor for this site is Dr. Benjamin Friedell, a residency trained and board certified family practitioner. Dr. Friedell’s office is located in Oneonta near Fox Hospital. He is a graduate of the Case Western Reserve school of medicine and completed residency training in family medicine at Highland Hospital/University of Rochester. Dr. Amy Shepard Grace, who completed the RMED program in 1994, is a family practitioner in the community.

A.O. Fox Hospital is the cornerstone of the FoxCare Network, a community of healthcare services that includes the Fox Nursing Home, the FoxCare Center and seven physician practices. The Network has a Medical Staff of more than 70 providers and employs more than 800 people. In addition, Fox has clinical affiliations with the Albany Medical Center, the Southeastern Otsego Health Center and Margaretville Memorial Hospital, as well as part ownership of At-Home Care. The FoxCare Center, a state-of-the-art 140,000 square foot outpatient facility, was created through renovation of an abandoned shopping mall, and includes HealthLinks@FoxCare, the area’s newest health and fitness center.

Preceptor Profile: Dr. Benjamin N. Friedell

Dr. Friedell practices in the town of Oneonta. There he takes care of a predominately older adult population but does see a number of pediatric patients.. The diverse population he works with includes the poor, patients with HIV, and non-english speaking patients among others. His work involves time in the office and the hospital, and nursing homes. In the office he performs such procedures as joint injections, osteopathic manipulation, and gyecological exams among many others. He is in a very technologically up to date practice and uses tablet computers in everyday encounters.
