New York Communities and Preceptors— Community of Oneida

Oneida is a small city located about 30 miles east of Syracuse and just south of the NYS Thruway. The town boasts just under 14,000 residents. The major employer in the area is Oneida, Ltd., which manufactures Oneida silverware and other products. Main Street is filled with locally owned shops and restaurants.

Primary preceptors for this site are Drs. John Wight and other members of his group practice. Among this group is Dr. Harry Capone, who complete the RMED program in Oneida in 1995 before entering the Family Practice Residency Program at St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center in Syracuse. All members of the group are board certified family physicians. Dr. Wight completed his residency training at St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center in Syracuse.

Oneida Hospital is a modern 108 bed facility with Medical/Surgical, CCU, Maternity and Pediatric services. It also operates an attached long term care facility.

Preceptor Profile: Dr. John Wight

Dr. Wight practices in the town of Vernon. There he takes care of predominately adult population but does see a significant number of pediatric patients. His work involves time in the office and in schools. In the office he performs such procedures as pulmonary function testing, joint injections and gynecologic exams among many others. The call schedule of a student in his office is around once a week.
