New York Communities and Preceptors— Community of Cortland
The city of Cortland, with a population of nearly 20,000, is located 32 miles directly south of Syracuse in a predominantly agricultural region. The State University of New York at Cortland is located within the city. Housing for students is located in a hospital-owned house across the street from the hospital. Assistance with student support is provided through the Family Health Network of Central New York, which operates family health centers in the City of Cortland and in a number of outlying underserved communities.

Cortland was one of the earliest communities to join the RMED educational network. During most years two students are placed in this community. Preceptors may include; Anthony diGiovanna, MD, Lynn Cunningham, MD, who is a former RMED student, Rose Hurley, MD, and Kathleen Barone, MD, also a former RMED student. All preceptors are currently board certified in family medicine. Drs. diGiovanna and Cunningham are graduates of the Family Practice residency program at St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center. Preceptors for all specialty rotations are located in the community. |
Cortland Memorial Hospital is a 177 bed facility with med/surg, ICU, pediatric and OB/GYN services. A long-term care facility is attached. |
Preceptor Profile: Dr. Anthony Di Giovanna
Dr. Di Giovanna practices in Cortland. There he takes care of predominately adult population but does see a significant number of pediatric patients. The diverse population he works with includes the poor, the mentally and physically handicapped, and substance abuse patients among others. His daily work involves time both in the office and the hospital. In the office he performs such procedures as flexible sigmoidoscopy, tympanometry, counseling, and gynecologic exams among many others. He is in a very technologically up to date practice and uses both a tablet PC and a PDA in everyday patient interaction. |
