New York Communities and Preceptors—Community of Canandaigua


The City of Canandaigua has a population of almost 12,000 and lies within the county of Ontario, which has a population of nearly 100,000. Canandaigua is situated on the northern end of Canandaigua lake, and is approximately 70 miles west of Syracuse and 30 miles southeast of Rochester. Local attractions include Sonnenburg Gardens and Mansion and the Finger Lakes Performing Arts Center. Assistance with student support is provided through the Finger Lakes Health System, a Rural Health Network sponsored by F.F.Thompson Hospital.

Since joining the RMED educational network in 1995, the preceptor for Canandaigua has been Dr. Robert Ostrander, a board certified family physician who completed his residency training at St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center in Syracuse. Dr. Ostrander and his partners practice in Rushville, a small community approximately 10 miles southeast of Canandaigua. In 2001, for the first time, a second student has been placed in Canandaigua, working under the supervision of Drs. Michael Foote and Kerry Graf.
F.F.Thompson Hospital is a 221 bed facility located within the City of Canandaigua and containing all major services.

Preceptor Profile: Dr. Robert Ostrander

Dr. Ostrander practices in the town of Rushville. There he takes care of a wide range of patients, including geriatric, pediatric, and obstetric patients. The diverse population he works with includes the poor, non-English speakers, and substance abuse patients. His work involves time in the office and the hospital, and nursing homes. In the office he performs such procedures as laceration repair, family counseling, and osteopathic manipulationamong many others. He is in a very technologically up to date practice and bring a tablet PC in each exam room.
