Retinitis Pigmentosa
Retinitis Pigmentosa is an inherited eye disease that
results in progressive damage to the retina. Often the pigment layer
of the eye undergoes changes called "bone spiculing".
Of note, there is not actual bone material in the eye, instead the
clumping of pigment, often along the blood vessels, looks like chips
of bone.
Electrophysiologic
testing can help make the diagnosis.
Although the disease itself is incurable at this time, some of
its associated problems can be treated, such as cataracts and cystoid
macular edema http://www.upstate.edu/eye/retina/cme. That is why
people with retinitis pigmentosa should have regular eye exams.
