Pneumatic Retinopexy
In certain cases of a retinal detachment http://www.upstate.edu/eye/retina/rd
a procedure called a pneumatic retinopexy may be an option.
In this office procedure, a gas bubble is injected into the eye
and used to cover the break in the retina. In small detachments,
a freezing treatment done before the injection of the gas helps
to keep the retina attached.
If the detachment is large, a so-called "steamroller"
technique can be used. In this variation, the gas bubble is used
to force fluid from behind the retina out of the break. At some
later date, laser is used to close the break.
As with any procedure, discuss all of the option and their risks,
such as scleral
buckle procedure and vitrectomy
surgery.
