
Anthony Andrews, MD, a Board Certified Ophthalmologist, acts as
Chief of the Retina Division and an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology
at SUNY Upstate University Center for Vision Care and Center for
Retina Care.
Prior to joining SUNY Upstate, Dr. Andrews was Chief
of the Retina Service at SUNY Downstate and Director of SUNY Downstate's
Retinal-Vascular Center.
Dr. Andrews was the first retina surgeon in Brooklyn
to perform sutureless vitrectomy surgery. At one point, he was
responsible for all of the retina surgery at four Brooklyn hospitals,
including SUNY Downstate, one of the top five institutions in
the country for vitrectomies to correct scarring and deposits
of fibrous material caused by diabetes mellitus.
Dr. Andrews graduated magna cum laude from Yale
University, earning both bachelor's and master's degrees in molecular
biochemistry and biophysics. He received his medical degree from
the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine where he was
named a Penn Medical Scholar. After an ophthalmology residency
at Penn State where he served as co-chief resident his final year,
he completed a two-year medical and surgical vitreoretinal fellowship
at Harvard University, the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary
and the Schepens Retina Associates.
Dr. Andrews has published several retina papers
including a major article on retina surgery for retinopathy of
prematurity. He is currently involved in the Center
for Vision Research, assisting in their new diabetes eye study

Dr. Andrews grew up in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania
and his wife, Donna, grew up some 40 miles from Syracuse in New
Berlin, New York. Their son, Nicholas, enjoys living so close
to his grandparents!
Dr. Andrews is very excited to join SUNY Upstate
Medical University. He like being a part of this community and
participated in the Diabetes Walk for a Cure here in Syracuse
last October.
