Phase II—Task Teams Develop Recommendations

January - June 2007

In January, Dr. Smith commissioned these five cross-functional Presidential Select Task Teams:
  • Faculty
  • Students
  • Clinical Enterprise
  • Research Enterprise
  • Employer of Choice
Each team was charged with suggesting improvements that would eventually shape a shared vision and focus across our enterprise.

The teams held open forums to request ideas from the Upstate community and met frequently to develop strategic recommendations. In June, each team presented its recommendations to the President and his Executive Council.

This collective body of work [team recommendations] is of major significance in shaping our future.

Team Process

  • Each team was staffed with a chair, vice chair, facilitator and recorder.
  • Teams were cross-functional. Each team included content experts, as well as members from IMT, Finance, Spiritual Care, HR, Marketing/Public Relations, and the Foundation.
  • Team members were given a Presidential Charter and a copy of the University's Environmental Scan.
Each team researched and gathered information to form their recommendations. Methods included:
  • On-line surveys to staff, faculty, chairs, and students for confidential opinions and suggestions.
  • Conference call with Southwest Airlines for Employer of Choice.
  • Analyzing trends in technology, personnel resources, consumerism/quality, and finances/reimbursement for clinical care.
  • Analyzing other university models to develop campus teams for ownership, accountability, and campus unity.
  • Focus groups with students from all colleges.
  • Interviews with deans, administrators, medical residents and students
  • Open forums
  • Team retreats

Quick Wins

Teams were encouraged to identify quick wins, which are short-term projects with significant impact. See attached excel document for quick wins currently in process or achieved.
