Pediatric Emergency Department

The Pediatric Emergency Department cares for about 21,000 of the 52,000 annual ED patients. Supervision is provided by Pediatric Emergency Medicine Physicians as well as Emergency Medicine Physicians. Current pediatric emergency medicine faculty are well-referenced contributors to the field of Pediatric Emergency Medicine both within the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Emergency Physicians. In October 2009 the Golisano Children's Hospital opened. This state of the art facility capitalizes on the University's already established pediatric tertiary capabilities, research efforts and teaching activities to ensure that state of the art pediatric clinical care and research will continue to expand and flourish in Central New York.

EMS & Disaster Medicine Fellowship

Air OneThe EMS & Disaster Medicine Fellowship at SUNY Upstate Medical University offers a wide range of clinical, research and administrative opportunities, including both ground and air medical transport training with a variety of EMS and Fire agencies. EMS & Disaster Medicine operates a Physician Response Team and the Fellow receives training for field response and access to a response vehicle. The EMS & Disaster Medicine Research Group meets regularly and is supported by the Department's full time research staff. Event Medicine is included and other exciting elective opportunities are also available to the Fellow. National meeting and other educational experiences are included in the curriculum. Research

Fellow at WorkThe Department of Emergency Medicine has many current research activities. Fellows who desire to sit for the Pediatric Emergency Emergency Medicine Subboards through the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) must complete a research project that meets the criteria of the ABP before they are allowed to take the board exam. Fellows whose primary board will be the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) are encouraged to participate in research projects. Additionally, laboratory space is available within the Department of Emergency Medicine. The PED is Hospital Emergency Department Affiliate (HEDA) of the Pediatric Emergency Care Affiliated Research Network (PECARN). The Fellowship Director is the site Principal Investigator for this project funded through a demonstration grant from the Emergency Medical Serves for Children Program of the Maternal Child Health Bureau.
