Pediatric Emergency Department

The Pediatric Emergency Department cares for about 18,000 of the 44,000 annual ED patients. The PED is covered by a dedicated attending from 8:00AM to 2:00AM daily. Current pediatric emergency medicine faculty are well-referenced contributors to the field of Pediatric Emergency Medicine both within the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Emergency Physicians. Plans are progressing rapidly to soon break ground for the new Central New York Children's Hospital at University Hospital. This state of the art facility will capitalize on the University's already established pediatric tertiary capabilities, research efforts and teaching activities to ensure that state of the art pediatric clinical care and research will continue to expand and flourish in Central New York.
EMS & Disaster Medicine Fellowship
The EMS & Disaster Medicine Fellowship at SUNY Upstate Medical University offers a wide range of clinical, research and administrative opportunities, including both ground and air medical transport training with a variety of different agencies. The Fellow holds a university appointment as Clinical Instructor of Emergency Medicine and is provided full faculty benefits and incentives, including a competetive salary, access to a response car, tuition to educational courses, national and local meetings, books and equipment. Research
The Department of Emergency Medicine has many current research activities. Fellows who desire to site for the Pediatric Emergency Emergency Medicine Subboards through the American
Board of Pediatrics (ABP) must complete a research project that meets the criteria of the ABP
before they are allowed to take the board exam. Fellows whose primary board will be the American
Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) are encouraged to participate in research projects. Aditionally,
laboratory space is available within the Department of Emergency Medicine. The PED is Hospital
Emergency Department Affiliate (HEDA) of the Pediatric Emergency Care Affiliated Research Network
(PECARN). The Fellowship Director is the site Principal Investigator for this project funded through
a demonstration grant from the Emergency medical Serves for Children Program of the Maternal Child
Health Bureau.
