Each year of the clinical schedule for Emergency Medicine Residents consists of thirteen 4-week
blocks. By clicking on the sample clinical schedules below you can find out specific information
about each block.
- EM-1 (Internship): Evaluation and management of the ED patient
- EM-2: Simultaneous evaluation and management of multiple ED patients and development of procedural skills.
- EM-3: Emergency Department clinical management and administration, including supervising medical students and interns.
Clinical education occurs at multiple sites in the Syracuse area. For a more detailed description of

EM-1 (Internship)
Focus: Evaluation and management of the ED patient.

Anesthesia & Adult ED
Length: 2 weeks (2 weeks in the Adult ED complete this 4 week block)
Location: Crouse Hospital
Description: Provides residents with opportunities to develop airway management skills including bag-valve mask ventilation and endotracheal intubation. Residents have the opportunity to work one-on-one with anesthesia attendings.

Adult ED & Burns
Length: 2 weeks (2 weeks in the Adult ED complete this 4 week block)
Location: Clark Burn Center at University Hospital
Description: Provides residents with opportunities to work with the surgical burn team in the care and management of inpatient and outpatient burn victims, including operative care and extensive teaching in wound management.

Cardio-Thoracic Surgery
Length: 4 weeks
Location: University Hospital
Description: Provides residents with opportunities to develop assessment and patient management skills specific to the patient admitted to the Thoracic Surgery Service. Skills developed include placement and removal of chest tubes in addition to experience relating to the principles and procedures of thoracotomy.

Cardiology
Length: 4 weeks
Location: University Hospital
Description: Residents serve as interns on the Cardiology service and gain perspective on the issues faced during the management of adult cardiac patients after they are admitted to the telemetry unit or cardiac care unit. Skills developed include ECG interpretation, management of congestive heart failure and myocardial infarction.

Internal Medicine
Length: 4 weeks
Location: St. Joseph's Hospital
Description: Provides residents with opportunities to develop assessment and management skills pertaining to the adult patient with non-surgical complaints. Residents serve as interns on the General Internal Medicine Service and gain perspective on the issues faced during the management of adult patients after they are admitted from the Emergency Department.

Obstetrics
Length: 4 weeks
Location: St. Joseph's Hospital
Description: Provides residents with opportunities to develop assessment and management skills specific to the pregnant female. The resident functions as part of the Labor and Delivery team. Responsibilities include initial triage and management of the pregnant female, assisting the mother-to-be with vaginal delivery of her newborn and assisting the attending obstetrician with surgical cases.

Orthopedic Surgery
Length: 4 weeks
Location: University Hospital
Description: Provides residents with opportunities to develop assessment and patient management skills specific to the orthopedic patient. Skills are developed in the inpatient, outpatient, and ED setting, including assessment and management of orthopedic injuries and proper techniques for immobilization using a variety of splinting materials.

Inpatient Pediatrics
Length: 4 weeks
Location: University Hospital
Description: Provides residents with opportunities to develop assessment and patient management skills specific to the pediatric population. Residents function as an intern on the General Pediatric service and are responsible for all aspects of patient care during their inpatient stay. There are scheduled didactic lectures provided by the Department of Pediatrics as well as those activities scheduled by the Department of Emergency Medicine.

MICU
Length: 4 weeks
Location: Crouse Hospital
Description: Provides residents with opportunities to function as the senior resident on an ICU team. Working in a newly designed 22-bed Intensive Care Unit, residents are responsible for admission and inpatient care of critically ill patients. The schedule requires in-house call every three nights and provides an autonomous learning environment.

Toxicology
Length: 4 weeks
Location: Central New York Poison Center
Description: Provides residents with opportunities to work closely with certified toxicologists to ensure appropriate care and management of the poisoned patient. Clinical rounds are performed on patients at local hospitals. In addition, residents follow cases from hospitals throughout a large catchment area of northern and western New York by telephone. A weekly case conference and daily lectures are provided by certified toxicologists.

PICU
Length: 4 weeks
Location: University Hospital
Description: Provides residents with opportunities to function as the senior resident on a Pediatric ICU team responsible for admission and inpatient care of critically ill pediatric patients in a busy regional children's hospital. Schedule is Monday through Friday with an exceptional clinical experience obtained through daily rounds with well-known Pediatric Intensivists.
