Not all physicians can provide effective medical care in the prehospital environment. The physicians on the Response Team have significant experience and training in out-of-hospital medicine. Four of the members of the team have obtained fellowship training in EMS. Two are also paramedics and two are interior firefighters. All team members have advanced training and experience in EMS and the specialized capability to provide field medical and surgical procedures. Only physicians with these advanced skills and operational experience have been selected to serve in this capacity.
Derek R. Cooney, MD, FF/NREMT-P, FACEP
The Medical Director for the team is Dr. Derek Cooney, who is also the Director of EMS & Disaster Medicine. Dr. Cooney completed his EMS fellowship at the Texas A&M Health Science Center / Scott & White. Dr. Cooney provides Medical Direction services to a number of EMS and Fire agencies in the CNY EMS Region. He serves on numerous committees at the local, state and national level; including the Onondaga County EMS Advisory Board and the New York State EMS Council. Dr. Cooney is also a paramedic and an interior firefighter.
Jeremy Joslin, MD, FAWM
Dr. Joslin completed his EMS specialty training at SUNY Upstate and is now the director of the Wilderness & Expedition Medicine fellowship training program. He serves as medical director for numerous large events in the region, including the New York State Fair and the Ironman Syracuse. He also provides prehospital medical care to organizations and events around the world.
Christian Knutsen, MD
Dr. Knutsen complete his two year EMS Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and joined the Emergency Department in 2009. He is the Associate Director of the EMS & Disaster Medicine Fellowship, the Medical Director for Upstate's EMS Programs that offers EMT basic and paramedic original and refresher courses to the region and is the Chair of the REMAC EMS Education Committee. He is also the medical director for Fayetteville Fire and EMS, Liverpool Fire Department and LaFayette Fire Department.
David Landsberg, MD, FF/EMT-P, FCCP
Dr. Landsberg is an expert in critical care and has many years of prehospital experience. He provides medical direction for EMS and Fire agencies in the CNY EMS Region. Dr. Landsberg is an award-winning educator and is also a firefighter and a paramedic in the State of New York.
Harry Wallus, DO, MPH
Dr. Wallus completed his EMS Medicine Fellowship training at SUNY Upstate Medical University finishing Emergency Medicine Residency at University Hospital. He is actively involved in EMS and Emergency Medicine education and research.
Susan Schreffler, MD
Dr. Schreffler is the current EMS Medicine Fellow and a former recipient of the SUNY Upstate Medical University Department of Emergency Medicine Resident Award for Excellence in EMS. Dr. Schreffler completed her Emergency Medicine Residency training at University Hospital.
