That is not surprising, said Dr. Christian Knutsen, an emergency room physician at Upstate University Hospital.

"Elderly folks have slower reaction times and it's harder for them to compensate for those slips and slides," Knutsen said. "Maybe they're doing fine all summer and fall, and then winter comes and the difficulty factors add up."
