Research Abstract
Patient Perception of Emergency Physicians: The Gender Gap Still Exists
We examined the ability of emergency department patients to recognize male and female physicians as their doctor. A convenience sample of adult patients seen in the emergency department were asked by a trained observer minutes following the first physician contact whether they had been seen by a physician. Female physicians were significantly less likely than males to be recognized as physicians. Further research is ongoing to identify factors and interventions that may be helpful in rectifying this discrepancy.
