Simulation at The EM-STAT Center

Our Vision

The Simulation Center will be a leader in educational research and in the development of educational models that ultimately serve to improve patient care.

The Simulation Center will be recognized locally and nationally as being an outstanding resource for manikin -based simulation education. The education provided will focus on translating medical knowledge into practice and the reduction of medical errors.

The Simulation Center will be a model and resource for others who are trying to establish a successful simulation program.

Our Goal

Our goal at the EM-STAT Simulation Center is to help fulfill the mission of the department by improving patient care through the use of educational models and technology to help translate knowledge into outstanding clinical care.

The Department of Emergency Medicine EM-STAT Simulation Center was developed to bring medical education into the 21st century. Simulation training was originally developed for pilots to learn flight skills without placing passengers at risk. In much the same way, having healthcare providers practice and improve their clinical skills without putting patients at risk just makes sense.

The EM-STAT Simulation Center is equipped with a state of the art manikin "family." The two adult, pediatric and infant manikins talk, cry, breathe, blink, and respond physiologically to all medical interventions. Life-saving procedures can be perfected by practicing on the manikins and lower-fidelity procedure oriented manikins. Our simulated patients are treated in our virtual emergency department. The EM-STAT ED has two bays which are wired for AV recording of the scenarios. Scenario debriefings occur in our state of the art classroom while the scenario is played back so important teaching moments can be reviewed.
