services, and activities and research in emergency preparedness for both routine and extraordinary circumstances.
The major activities of the center are in the areas of:

Dr. Grant received his doctorate from the University of Southern California and his Master's from The American University. Currently he serves as Executive Director, Center for Emergency Preparedness and Research Professor, Emergency Medicine. He also holds an appointment at the Stress and Motivated Behavior Institute New Jersey Medical School, Department of Neurology and Neuroscience University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey. He is a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society of London and a member of the American College of Legal Medicine. He has completed the Federal Emergency Management Agency Emergency Management Institute Professional Development Program. In addition to work in the area of emergency preparedness, he is responsible for the development of the research programs and for enhancing the evidence based medicine programs of the department. He serves as in-house research design and statistics consultant to faculty, residents and staff.

Jay M. Scott is the Associate Director of the Center for Emergency Preparedness and Clinical Instructor for the Department of Emergency Medicine. Jay has served NYS as a Paramedic since 1985 and earned his BS in Business Administration from SUNY Empire State College. Jay holds instructor certifications in Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support and Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support. He is a member of the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT), the National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP) and the National Association of EMS Educators (NAEMSE). He serves as the Chairman of the Continuing Education Coordinating Board for EMS (CECBEMS) and is a founding member of the NAEMSE, EMS Educators Certification Board of Directors. For leisure, Jay coaches an indoor soccer team and practices home woodworking. He also is a certified second degree black belt in Kenpo Karate.

Ellen Giraud received a dual BA in English & Environmental Biology in 1996 from SUNY at Oswego. She then worked as the Manuscript and Publications Specialist at LeMoyne College before coming to SUNY Upstate Medical University in 2000. She joined the Department of Emergency Medicine's Center for Emergency Preparedness in 2005. Ellen is also a Manager at the Central New York Ronald McDonald House and, beginning in 2006, will be working toward her MS in Recreational Therapy at SUNY Cortland.

Ms. Wojcik received her BS in Ceramic Engineering from Alfred University in 1995. In addition, she received certification as an Athletic Trainer from the National Athletic Trainers Association, which she still maintains. Ms. Wojcik completed her MS in Biomedical Engineering in 1997 at the University of Kentucky. Following graduation she became a project manager and principal investigator at the University of Kentucky, Kentucky Injury Prevention and Research Center (KIPRC). While at KIPRC, Ms. Wojcik was responsible for the operation of grants to conduct injury prevention and surveillance research as well as developing new grant applications. Her main focus was on occupational injury intervention research. Ms. Wojcik began her emergency medicine research efforts in July of 2000 when she joined Upstate Medical University as an Assistant Research Professor. Since her arrival at Upstate she has been involved with numerous emergency medicine research projects and the submission of grant proposals. Some of Ms. Wojcik's recent research activities include: the utilization of an immunization registry in the pediatric emergency department, development of a biomechanical model for lateral process of the talus fractures, the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network's (PECARN) core data project, bronchiolitis, head trauma and first time seizure studies, and post-concussion symptoms in children. In addition to her emergency medicine research she has interests in occupational, sports, and recreational injury prevention, biomechanics, biomedical implant research and emergency preparedness.
