Basilia, COM Class of 2012, is president of LGBT Upstate. The Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender group is in its third year and is open to students, faculty and staff.
“The most important things for us are visibility, participation and support,” Basilia said. “We’re mainly for cohesiveness, so that if you are here on campus, the group can be a safe space. We also are trying to work for more educational goals in the curriculum, including lecture time that covers LGBT health issues.”

Brian Buckley, MPH Class of 2012
What impresses me most about SUNY Upstate is how it has actively encouraged me to engage the world outside its walls. From day one of orientation, it was clear that this institution would not only provide me with a superb medical education, but would also push me to use skills accrued on the wards and in lecture halls to tackle challenges facing our future patients and their communities.
I consider myself very fortunate to study at a school where service and initiative are so highly valued and nurtured. While there are many great medical universities, I feel that I would truly be missing out if I weren’t an Upstate student. |
