Visiting Student

Many Medical Students choose to become a visiting student to engage in a medical elective at SUNY Upstate Medical University that might not be offered at their home school, or because they are interested in SUNY Upstate as a possible employer for their medical residency.  Please click on the visiting student procedures link to obtain procedures and application forms to become a visiting student at Upstate.

IFMSA (International Federation of Medical Students' Associations) Exchange Program and Form

To obtain information about the exchange and global health opportunities available from the International Federation of Medical Students Association—USA—Local chapter (IFMSA), please contact:

    The form is to be used by Upstate COM students who wish to apply to do an elective exchange abroad through the local chapter of International Federation of Medical Students Association (IFMSA).

Letters of Invitation and Support

Letters of invitation and support used to obtain a B1 or B2 visitor visa, are available to international visiting students who have already been accepted as a visiting student at SUNY Upstate, by sending an email request to:

The email request should include the following information:

  • Visting student name and email address
  • Country of citizenship
  • Country where the visitor visa application will be made.
  • Name and address of foreign medical school in which they are enrolled
  • SUNY Upstate Faculty Sponsor’s Name and Department
  • SUNY Upstate course code and title of elective
  • Dates of attendance  
  • Instructions for how they would like to receive the letter, by mail, fax, scanned email attachment, etc.
