Educational Opportunity Program (EOP)

Educational Opportunity Program (EOP)

The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) is an academic and financial support program which provides a college education for capable students with limited financial resources and inadequate academic preparation. Only those individuals who are both academically and economically disadvantaged will be granted EOP status.

Eligibility

To be eligible for EOP status, transfer students must have been an EOP, HEOP, or SEEK student in their previous college. Those students who are transferring from a college or university that did not have one of these programs, or who are transferring from a college or university outside of New York State will be screened to verify both economic and academic eligibility prior to admission.

Academic Guidelines for EOP

A student's high school grades, class rank and standardized test scores, alone, do not always provide an accurate picture of academic ability and potential to do college work. As part of the EOP application procedure students provide additional information (letters of recommendation and a personal statement) which outline extracurricular activities and job experiences as well as other personal and family obligations that may have affected the student's academic achievement.

This supplementary information aids the College in assessing the student's ability to do college work, especially if the traditional methods of evaluation are not true measures of the student's potential. Applicants must have completed all prerequisites and must show potential for satisfactory completion of for their program of choice.

Economic Guidelines for EOP

Income guidelines have been established to determine economic eligibility for EOP. Refer to the table in the State University Application Guidebook to confirm eligibility.

What Does Admission to EOP Mean?

EOP is primarily an academic support program. Those granted EOP status receive special tutoring (group and/or individual), academic advisement, career and educational counseling and personal counseling.

  • Financial aid is provided to EOP students to help meet the costs of tuition, fees, books, room, food and personal expenses. All financial aid is awarded on the basis of financial need after an evaluation of family resources.
  • Since EOP students come from financially disadvantaged families they will usually receive substantial amounts of help in meeting these costs. Because the amount of money available to students is limited, students are strongly encouraged to apply for admission and financial aid as soon as possible.
  • The deadline for filing is May 1.
