SUNY Upstate Medical University (Upstate), traces its origins to 1834 when New York City medical educators founded the nations 25th medical school in the upstate community of Geneva, New York. The school gained distinction in 1849 by awarding an M.D. degree to Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman in the United States to become a physician. In 1876 Sarah Loguen Fraser, an African American female, was awarded the M.D. degree, a bold act for the time. This demonstrates the institutions commitment to the disenfranchised early in its history. The school became a state operated medical school in 1950, enabling the school
to offer a relatively inexpensive medical education for the economically disadvantaged
population. We hope you will find the information provided in our website valuable in helping you explore your future career in the health care professions. If you have further questions or if we can be of any assistance, please contact our office. |
