Visa Information

Who needs an F-1 Student VISA?

You will need an F-1 visa if you meet any of the following conditions:

  • If you do not have any other visa to permit you to enter the United States
  • If you are attending another school and currently have an F-1 visa
  • If you want to work on-campus
  • If you want to do Optional Practical Training after graduation

What do you need to obtain an F-1 Student VISA?

  • You must be accepted to attend one of the SUNY Colleges of Upstate Medical University.
  • You must plan to enroll and maintain a full time course load.
  • You must prove that you have sufficient financial support to pay for your educational costs and living expenses.
  • Please note that the University does not have financial aid for international students, except for Graduate Assistantships in the College of Graduate Studies.
  • If you are currently in the United States, you must have maintained lawful F-1 status.

If you need an F-1 visa, complete the Aplication for a Form I-20

The I-20 is a certificate from the school indicating eligibility for an F-1 visa. Attach any documentation that is requested; return the completed form to:
