Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS)
The VSAS is an Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) application for 4th year clinical away electives. The service includes a searchable database of electives, a short application, the ability to pay application fees online, and tracking of offers and schedules. There are 63 schools participating in this service for the 2009-10 academic year.

Unique Elective Opportunities
Epidemiology Elective Program (EEP) provides an introduction to preventive medicine, public health and the principles of applied epidemiology to senior medical and veterinary students. Elective students have the opportunity to assist with epidemiologic investigations of infectious diseases, cancer, congenital malformations, environmental and occupational diseases, injuries, chronic diseases and reproductive health. The elective is offered September through early June. Assignments are for a 6-8 week period.
The American Psychiatric Association established the program of Minority Medical Student Elective in HIV Psychiatry in 2004, to provide an opportunity for 4th year minority medical students to participate in a one-month clinical or research elective in HIV psychiatry. The Senior Elective in HIV Psychiatry begins with an intensive two-day training in Washington, DC. Topics range from neuropsychiatric complications of HIV, somatic complaints, and mood disorders to special patient populations including people with substance use disorders and/or those suffering from severe mental illnesses. Training modalities include a combination of lectures, role playing, case vignettes, and first-person accounts through interviews with HIV positive people. Students then travel to training sites for their clinical or research experience for the month of September. The application deadline is March 31, 2010 with selections to be announced in late April. US-Mexico Border Health Scholars Program by Univ. of Texas HCS San Antonio—South Texas Environmental Education and Research (STEER). Unique field elective at the US-Mexico Border for students enrolled in US MD/MPH, medical, public, and other heatlh profession degree programs. 4 week electives available at Laredo and Harlingen TX. National Institutes of Health Resident and Medical Student Electives Clinical Electives Program (CEP). Structured clinical electives and customized research electives for third and four year medical students of 1-3 months in duration. Applications are accepted on a continual basis and must be received three months before the anticipated start date.
Global Electives for Medical Students and Pre-Meds with Child Family Health International. Spend 4 or 8 weeks working with local doctors in a variety of healthcare settings.
