International Opportunities

Team Haiti

College of Nursing student Kathleen McDonnell volunteers in Haiti. Read about other student experiences.

The Center for Civic Engagement facilitates international opportunities in selected countries where Upstate Medical University has an established presence—Haiti, Nicaragua and Peru.

Our students work in conjunction with Upstate physicians in clinics and other health-care settings. The center does not provide financial support, housing or placements, but can help students with preliminary contact information.

For example, a group of students who formed “Team Haiti” travels to the island country during the December break to offer medical care under the supervision of local physicians. Our students also have gone to other countries to work in a variety of health care settings.

The center also sponsors a Global Health Education Lecture Series on campus. Guest speakers provide a glimpse into global health career opportunities and highlight the challenges and rewards experienced by health professionals around the world.

For more information, contact the program coordinator at 315 464-8807 or visit our office in Weiskotten, Room 0217, below the Office of Student Admissions.

"That kind of work is a great way to keep in touch with communities," CiCi said. "These are the people we’re going to be serving some day in a medical way. It keeps you focused on what we’re actually here for."
