Program Description: Volunteers will work with a government funded clinic that works to serve Nsuta and 31 surrounding villages. It is the only clinic in the area, and is extremely busy. They have maternity, male and female wards, a laboratory, and a dispensary. It mainly serves as a day clinic, but 24 hour emergency care is also provided to the community. The maternity and preventive medicine ward serves to register and weigh babies, give family planning services, and provide community outreach and education. Volunteers will assist nurses in all wards and with adminstration.

Program Description: The Nutritional Rehabilitation Home (NRH) requires volunteers with expertise in medicine, nutrition, nursing, physical therapy, cerebral palsy. The NRH also needs volunteers who are willing and able to build relationships with the children and mothers who reside at the home. Opportunities for health and hygiene education exist in terms of teaching mothers hygiene, sanitation, cooking. Administrative help is also needed. At NRH, volunteers would be involved in patient care, nutritional assessment, nursing, and physical therapy, based on their previous experience. Other tasks would include playing with the children, engaging the mothers, administrative help, and participation in field visits to discharged patients.

This is an excellent placement for pre-med and nursing students, as they will be able to witness surgery and get hands-on experience. It is an opportunity for volunteers to learn how to assist in simple treatment of patients, to witness medical techniques and to learn how health care systems function in a developing country. Students can shadow doctors and help in surgery, the delivery room, general treatment, pediatrics, and rehabilitation.

Program Description: This is a public heath type placement, so volunteers will see mostly nutrition problems, child development and pregnancy issues. Volunteers will travel to nearby rural communities, promoting vaccination campaigns and general health and nutrition. Volunteers can also assist triage: this includes everything from weighing patients to measuring their height to taking their blood pressure. There will also be opportunities to assist in transportation of patients to the health centre in Izcuchaca by ambulance, to assist nurses at a local school, to assist an obstetrician with deliveries in Izcuchaca. Volunteers can also help with stitching wounds and giving general first aid.
