Dance Marathon for Global Health 2010

To benefit Doctors for Global Health

Promoting health and human rights for those who have no voice

Our Cause

The Upstate Medical University Dance Marathon for Global Health 2010 is a 12-hour student-run philanthropic event that unites the Syracuse community in an effort to raise money and increase awareness for Doctors for Global Health, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization promoting health, education, art and other human rights throughout the world. The funds raised by Dance Marathon for Global Health 2010 will support community health workers and teachers as they return to school to complete their formal education, assist communities in building health clinics to provide comprehensive medical care, medications (natural and pharmaceuticals), physical therapy, eyeglasses, and dental care, as well as constructing bridges to connect isolated communities both literally and metaphorically with more of the outside world and enable better access to care. In its second year, Dance Marathon for Global Health has become a multi-campus tradition comprised of volunteers who champion a commitment to service, leadership development and fun.

Our Beneficiary

Since its inception in 1995, Doctors for Global Health has accompanied and empowered communities in Argentina, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, Uganda and the United States. They are consistently improving the health and well-being of these communities by increasing access to quality health care, developing educational opportunities and avenues for artistic expression, and raising awareness of health and other human rights.
Every community supported by Doctors for Global Health has unique strengths and needs, but they all share a common thread: the health inequities they face are symptoms of larger social, economic and political injustices. Malnutrition, poverty, preventable death and violence all violate basic human rights. As global citizens, we must name and challenge these injustices.

Our History

Last year, Syracuse University hosted Dance Marathon for Global Health at Schine Underground for 12 hours on November 8, 2008. An article about the 2008 event was featured in the Daily Orange.
