Grades

The grade for the entire course is based on a total of 500 points (450 for three exams and 50 for Conference).

Passing Grade:
To be assured of passing MFM, a student must accumulate 350 points (70%).

High Pass Grade:

To be assured of receiving High Pass a student must achieve a total score of 425 points (85%) or greater, including at least 48 points for Conference.

Honors Grade:
To be assured of receiving Honors a student must achieve a total score of 450 points (90%) or greater, including at least 48 points for Conference.

Conditional:
At the discretion of the faculty, the grade of C (= Conditional Failure, a deficient grade) may be awarded to a student whose failure to reach the point total required for passing (350 points unless adjusted) is due to poor performance on a single exam or in the Conference component only.

Failing Grade:
The grade of F ( = outright Failure) will be awarded to students who fail to reach the point total required for passing (350 points unless adjusted) and who, in the judgment of the course faculty, do not meet the criteria for the C grade.

Incomplete Grade:

Under certain conditions (see below), a student may be excused from taking a scheduled exam. In such cases, the student will receive the I (Incomplete) grade and will need to complete the missing work in the following summer. See below for further details on make-up exams.

Remediation of deficient grades is discussed in the Special Cases. section.

Narrative comments: The forms on which course grades are submitted to the Registrar of the College of Medicine include space for written comments about the student’s attitude, effort, and performance. The College of Medicine encourages its faculty to make use of this means of assessing students’ progress as medical professionals, and the instructors in MFM take this responsibility seriously.
