Entamoeba histolytica (Amoebiasis)
General Information
Entamoeba histolytica is a small parasitic amoeba that causes infections most commonly in the intestine, but may spread to other organs such as liver, lungs, brain, spleen, skin and genitourinary tract resulting in abcesses in those sites. Infection occurs by ingesting fecal contaminated food or water.

Cytology
Round-to-oval basophillc organisms
Single round eccentric nucleus (occasionally multinucleated)
Cytoplasm containing phagocytised red blood cells
Background includes acute inflammation and necrotic debris

Special note
Can be confined using immunoperoxidase technique.
