Herpes
General Information
Herpes Simplex virus is a fairly common genital infection that effects the squamous epithelium of the vulva, vagina, and cervix. Infection may ascend to involve the endocervical or endometrial epithelium. Infections can occur in immunocompetant and immunocomprimised or debilitated patients.

Cytology
Multinucleated cells have enlarged nuclei with a bland, ground-glass apperance and nuclear molding
Nuclei may have large, single, eosinophilic intranuclear inclusions surrounded by a clear space or halo
No cytoplasmic inclusions
Margination of chromatin


Other findings
Culture, immunoperoxidase staining, direct immunofluorescence technology and in situ hybidization can be used for confirmatory tests.
